Three and Four Year Funding

All three and four year olds from the term after which they are three, are entitled to 15 hours of Free Early Education for 38 weeks of the year (570 hours of free childcare per year).  This applies until children reach compulsory school age (the term following their fifth birthday).

  • The 15 hours free entitled can be accessed over two, three, four or five days.
  • Many providers are able to offer the 15 hours in a variety of ways between the hours of 7am and 7pm to support families.
  • The 15 hours free entitlement can be shared between two providers.

 

When can children access a free place?

A child born in the period:

Will become eligible for a free place:

1st April   -  31st August

1st September following child's third birthday

1st September  -  31st December

1st January following child's third birthday

1st January  -  31st March

1st April following child's third birthday


Where can children access a free place?

Free Early Education places are available at a range of early years settings including:

  • nursery schools and classes
  • day nurseries
  • pre-schools
  • playgroups
  • childminders
